Supporting the Armed Forces!

The Schomberg Society works very closely with the Armed Forces Community in the greater Mournes area.

Our Ulster-Scots centre, Reivers House is shared with ‘Mourne Action for Survivors of Terrorism’ (MAST), who have many veterans and their families within their number. These veterans and their families make great use of Reivers House on a daily basis participating in many events, activities and programmes and we are very proud to assist and work closely with them on many projects.

The Schomberg Society has a strong working relationship with Kilkeel Royal British Legion and we work together on a number of mutually beneficial projects. This includes training and capacity building for members of the British Legion and veterans, and the Society has helped fundraise substantial funds for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal through poppy sales and Festivals of Remembrance Concerts. The Society has also raised substantial funds for various veteran’s support charities to help veterans, including Help For Heroes, Blesma and SSAFA.

Members of the Schomberg Society annually help organise a remembrance service for veterans and their families on Remembrance Sunday and engage with veterans and their families to oversee this very important occasion. Also on Remembrance Sunday each year, re-enactors from the Schomberg Society work along with the Royal British Legion and veterans to form a guard of honour at the Cenotaph in Kilkeel.

A very important part of the Schomberg Society’s Educational outreach is to work along with veteran and serving personnel to organise talks and workshops to schools, youth groups and community groups to better inform them as to the sacrifice and service given by the Armed Forces over the past century and into modern day.

The Schomberg Society was honoured to be in receipt of World War One Silhouettes as part of a project supported by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust. These Silhouettes are used by the Schomberg Society annually in schools and as part of exhibitions with youth organisations and are placed in Mourne Presbyterian Church each Remembrance Sunday to illustrate and remember the sacrifice given by members of the congregation.

The Society over the years has produced a number of exhibitions and informative literature where we have worked closely with veterans to give the wider community a better insight into men from the Mourne area who have served in her Majesty’s Armed Forces. These exhibitions are regularly seen in various venues in the area and literature is available from the Schomberg Society.

As part of the World War One commemorative Victoria Cross Project, the Schomberg Society was instrumental in organising the site and remembrance event for the commemorative Victoria Cross stone in memory of Robert Hill Hanna.

The Schomberg Society has a strong working relationship with the Ulster Defence Regiment and Royal Irish Regiment Associations in Kilkeel and have worked very closely with members of both Associations to produce an exhibition and mural project which tells the story of local soldiers and the lives they lived and the dangers they faced during The Troubles.

A number of years ago, the Schomberg Society organised a Festival to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Britain and produced a booklet and mural telling the story of the Mountains of Mourne Spitfire. The Society worked very closely with both Second World War Veterans and their families to tell the history of the Second World War here in Mourne and were able to bring a lot of them together for a special commemorative event.

As part of our annual Reivers Festival, the Society engaged with members of the Armed Forces to organise events and activities to tell the story of the Armed Forces Community. Highlights for many people is the performance by the famous ‘D-Day Darlings’ at this event!

The Schomberg Society has worked with local veterans to organises day trips and residential support for veterans and their families.

Despite the recent Covid-19 restrictions and lockdown, the Schomberg Society worked closely with veterans and serving personnel to encourage hundreds of people to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of VE Day! Members of the Society and veterans distributed hundreds of V.E. Packs to many homes across Mourne and provided materials and support to help people celebrate this important anniversary from the safety of their own homes!

The Society engages with leading veterans and serving personnel to participate in our community radio station broadcasts annually in Summer and Winter each year. This creates a fantastic opportunity to promote the work of the Armed Forces and tell the story of experiences of veterans and serving personnel.

Veterans, serving soldiers and their families make up a huge part of the Mourne community and we in the Schomberg Society are very proud to be able to work along with them!
